About Us

Our Style

We train in a traditional style of Karate known as Gojuryu.

Gojuryu was developed by Chojun Miyagi Sensei in Okinawa, Japan and is characterised by:

  • hard / soft power variation

  • close range combat

  • a combination of linear and circular techniques

  • emphasis on breathing techniques (including abdominal breathing)

Our Roots

The Adelaide University Karate Club was formed in 1974 when Masao Tada Hanshi (8th Dan, JKF Gojukai) returned to Japan and entrusted Chooi Renshi (5th Dan, JKF Gojukai) to continue teaching traditional Gojuryu Karate in Adelaide.

Chooi Renshi was chief instructor for almost 40 years before his passing in 2012. During that time, he forged the club's strong reputation and ties with senior instructors from around the world.

Today, the club is headed by Chooi Renshi’s senior student, Peter Davie Renshi (7th Dan, Seishikan). Peter Renshi is assisted by a cohort of senior instructors, who regularly train with the general class.
